SALEM – For the first time since 2002, and the second time in school history, the Roanoke College men's soccer team goes undefeated in the ODAC regular season after topping Guilford College 1-0 in double overtime. The Maroons finish the regular season with a record of 13-2-2, 10-0-1 in the ODAC, while the Quakers are 5-11-2, 4-5-2 in ODAC play.
The Maroons, who clinched the ODAC regular season title on Saturday after defeating Washington and Lee, will host the #1 vs #8 seed matchup on Saturday, November 1
st. While the official seeding will not be released until after the final regular season ODAC matches are finished on Wednesday Night, it appears as though the Maroons will host Eastern Mennonite at Kerr Stadium. A time has not been set for Saturday's quarterfinal contest.
Roanoke, which recieved votes in the latest NSCAA Top-25 poll, commanded control through most of the contest, leading in shots 22-9 through the game. Guilford did outshoot Roanoke in the first half, 4-3, but the Maroons responded with a 10-4 shot advantage in the second half. However, of the 21 shots taken in regulation, none happened to find the back of the net. There were many close calls for both teams, but at the end of 90 minutes, the game remained tied at 0-0.
The Maroons put up another nine shots in the overtime period, including an opportunity by
Tyler Carbaugh that slipped through the Guilford goalkeeper's legs, but just trailed four inches to the outside of the post. The golden opportunity for the Maroons came at 103:51 in the second overtime period.
Robby Lentine shuffled a pass over to
Christopher Fisher, who squared away the shot and put it in the back of the net for the game winner. This was Lentine's fourth assist of the season, as he ranks third on the team in the category. The goal by Fisher was his first of the season, proving to be a fitting end to the regular season as Roanoke picked up the 1-0 victory over Guilford.
Of Roanoke's 22 shots in the contest, two-time ODAC Player of the Week,
Marc Dinkel, was responsible for seven. He was followed in shots by
Robby Lentine, who took five attempts.
Tyler Carbaugh was the only other Maroon with multiple shots with three.
Cole Sinclair played all 103:51, tallying five saves.
Guilford was led in shots by both Lucas Prillaman and Jonny Goffredi, who both took three shots each. Goalkeeper Marko Mandalinic played the complete game and finished with eight saves.
The Maroons will be back in action on Saturday, November 1
st in the ODAC Quarterfinal round. Official seeding and game time will be revealed by the ODAC after the final games of the season on Wednesday, October 29
th.
