ROANOKE – The Roanoke College women's soccer team rolled to an 8-0 victory over Hollins University on Saturday in Old Dominion Athletic Conference Action. The Maroons now have a record of 9-6, 5-4 in ODAC play.
The Maroons took control of the match from start to finish, outshooting Hollins 62-0 throughout the contest.
Laura Garbarini and
Meagan Ryan each fired off 10 shots apiece during the contest, while five other players tallied four or more shots in the game. The Maroons have outscored their last two opponents 13-0, and is the fifth shutout win for Roanoke this season.
SierraLynn Johnson scored four goals for the Maroons during the game, including the first one at 10:29. The first goal was assisted by
Abbe Guarino, who also tallied the Maroons' second goal of the afternoon, less than a minute later.
Meagan Ryan was credited with the assist in the second Maroon goal. At 20:19, Meagan Branigan scored an unassisted goal to put the Maroons ahead by three. A little more than a minute later, Johnson scored her second goal, this time aided by
Laura Garbarini.
Roanoke's fifth goal came from Garbarini at 29:23, assisted by
Abby Hobby.
Marlana Barnard tallied Roanoke's final goal of the half, just seconds before the 45 minute horn.
Sara Celec picked up the assist for Barnard's finish. After just one half, Roanoke led Hollins 6-0.
Johnson scored Roanoke's only two goals in the second half, tabbing her third and fourth goals. Johnson scored the first at 52:51, assisted by Guarino. The second goal came at 60:50, when she headed the ball in from a corner kick by
Meagan Ryan. Johnson's four goals marked the first times she has scored all season, finishing the day with eight points. Roanoke's 8-0 advantage would hold over the final 30 minutes, as Roanoke picked up the ODAC victory.
Hollins' goalkeeper, Megan McKee played the complete game in net while tallying 26 saves. 16 saves came for McKee in the first half, while she swatted away 10 in the second. Roanoke led the contest in corner kicks with five. The game was played cleanly as there were only three fouls called during the entire contest.
The Maroons return to action on Tuesday, October 21
st as they play host to Randolph College. That contest is scheduled for a 7:00 PM start.
