HARRISONBURG – The Roanoke College men's soccer team held off Eastern Mennonite on Friday evening to win the Old Dominion Athletic Conference matchup, 4-3. The Maroons are now 10-2-2, 7-0-1 in the ODAC, while the Royals are 6-8-2, 3-5-0 in ODAC play.
The Maroons have now tied their best ODAC start since 2011, in which the Maroons have gone 7-0-1 in the first eight games during both years.
The Maroons jumped out to an early lead against the Royals, scoring all four goals in the first 30 minutes.
Orestis Ilias made the early strike, scoring the first goal in the first minute of the game. The Maroons got a turnover in the box, where
Robby Lentine made a pass out to Ilias, who shot through traffic for the goal. Just 15 minutes later, Ilias struck again, this time on his own. Ilias beat a defender of the left endline, finding the back of the net on a tough angle to put the Maroons ahead 2-0.
Mark Dinkle scored at the 22
nd minute, taking a left footed shot from the top right corner of the box, unassisted, to give the Maroons a three goal lead. Dinkle would go on to score the Maroons' fourth goal as well, this time at the 30-minute mark. He controlled a loose ball on the pitch, set it up and lofted it into the goal from the top of the box as Roanoke led 4-0 after the first 30 minutes of the game.
The Royals fought despite the deficit. Just minutes before the first half buzzer, EMU's Juan Luna scored as a pass from David Nester drew out the goalkeeper, giving Eastern Mennonite their first goal of the contest. In the 70
th minute, EMU's Jonathan Bush tallied the Royals' second goal, this time assisted by Luna on a give-and-go play. Three minute later, EMU closed the defecit to one, as Tyler Brenneman scored his first of the season on a loose ball in the box. With 18 minutes to play, Roanoke held just a one goal lead. However, the Maroons were able to hold off the charging Royals, winning 4-3, as the Maroons remain unbeaten in ODAC play.
Roanoke outshot Eastern Mennonite 21-13, with
Brandon Bauer leading the team with four shots.
Jackson Goyette followed with three attempts while six players tallied two shots each.
Cole Sinclair played 56 minutes in goal, tallying two saves.
Nick Tadros played the remaining time, picking up two saves in the contest.
Eastern Mennonite was led in shots by Juan Luna, who fired off five in the contest. Jake Lind and Jonathan Bush each made two attempts during the night. Andrew Yoder played 69 minutes in net, tallying four saves in the contest.
The Maroons return to action on October 21
st as they travel to play Lynchburg College. That contest is scheduled for a 7:00 PM start.
