Women's Soccer Tops Sweet Briar 5-0 on Wednesday

Box Score AMHERST – The Roanoke College women's soccer team picked up a 5-0 win over Sweet Briar College on Wednesday in Old Dominion Athletic Conference Action.  The Maroons now have a record of 8-6, 4-4 in the ODAC, while Sweet Briar is 6-5, 3-5 in ODAC play.
 
The Maroons got hot early, as Emily Whitaker scored the squad's first goal of the game in the first 1:45.  She was assisted by Barnes on the play, marking Barnes' second assist of the season, while Whitaker notched her first career goal.  Barnes' was back in the action again 13 minutes later as she assisted Marlana Barnard in the Maroons' second goal of the night.  Barnard is tied with Barnes for the team high in season goals, netting her sixth of the season. 
 
In the 19th minute, Whitaker found the back of the net for the second time, this time assisted by Taylor Sayegh.  After just 19 minutes, Roanoke held a 3-0 lead.  The Maroons' three-goal advantage held through the first half, entering the locker room up 3-0 at half.
 
The Maroons continued to put goals on the scoreboard in the second half.  Nathalie Torres scored the Maroons' fourth at 56:12, assisted by Shannon Dishaw.  The goal was Torres' first goal of the season.  The final goal of the game came as an own-goal on behalf of the Vixens.  Roanoke held off Sweet Briar for the remaining minutes, as Roanoke picked up the 5-0 victory.
 
The Maroons outshot Sweet Briar 27-3, with Nathalie Torres and Emily Whitaker leading the team with five attempts.  Marlana Barnard followed in shots with four.  Sarah Dvorak and Carolyn Sarbacher split 45 minutes apiece in goal, with neither player having to make a save.
 
The Vixens' three shots all came from Jaden Nichols.  Kat Day played the complete game in net, tallying 10 saves.
 
The Maroons return to action on Saturday, October 18th as they take the short trip to Hollins to play in ODAC action. That contest is scheduled for a 1:00 PM start.
