LYNCHBURG – The Roanoke College women's soccer team fell in its Old Dominion Athletic Conference opener against Lynchburg College on Friday Night, 1-0. The Maroons now have a record of 2-3-1; 1-0 ODAC, while the Hornets now sit with a mark of 7-1; 2-0 in ODAC play.
The Maroons had to face off against a tough Lynchburg squad on Friday, as the Hornets were ranked #14 in the latest D3Soccer.com Top-25 poll.
The Maroons were held to just two shots in the first half, with Roanoke's first coming at the 4:27 mark from
Lauren O'Brien. At 27:10 into the contest, Lynchburg's Kelley Smith scored a goal from a Rachel Sadowski corner kick to give the Hornets a 1-0 advantage. That goal would be the lone score of the night as #14 Lynchburg comes away with the 1-0 win.
Roanoke just got of five shots in the contest, with two each from
Nathalie Torres and
Lauren O'Brien, plus one shot from
Megan Branigan.
Carolyn Sarbacher played all 90 minutes in the goal and tallied four saves on the evening.
Lynchburg finished the contest with 11 shots, led by Erin Benson and Kelley Smith with two each. Seven other Lynchburg players finished with just one shot each. Tess Frelick and Karsen Schottleutner split time at goal for the Hornets, with Schottleutner tallying the team's only save.
The Maroons return to action on September 22
nd as they travel to Sewanee, TN to face off against The University of The South. That contest is scheduled for a 12:00 PM start.
