SALEM - In a battle that came down to the final minute, the Roanoke College men's basketball team defeated Shenandoah University in ODAC action, 65-61 on Saturday. The Maroons now have a record of 9-14, 2-12 in ODAC play while the Hornets are 3-20, 0-14 in the ODAC.
Daniel Eacho tallied his sixth double-double in seven games, netting 22 points and a career-high 15 rebounds. With Eacho's eight double-doubles this season, he has the most in a season since Curtis Peery tallied seven in 2008-09.
Eacho was followed in scoring by
Andrew Daniels and
Kwasi Amponsah, each netting 17 points. With Amponsah's 17 points, he moves up to 19
th all-time in scoring with 1247 points, passing Charles Small '88 (1241 points).
Cameron Smith tallied a career high 10 rebounds in the effort for the Maroons. Julian Ramiez dished out a career-high tying eight assists.
Both teams got off to a slow start in the contest, as Roanoke led 3-2, scoring all points off of
Daniel Eacho free throws three minutes into the game. The Hornets went on a four minute, 11-2 run to take an eight point lead with 12:38 on the clock. Shenandoah continued to control in the first half, building a lead of as many as 12, 25-13 with 7:51 to play in the half. However, the Maroons started to build a comeback towards the end of the half, with three-pointers from
Andrew Daniels and Amponsah and a layup from
Daniel Eacho. With 4:04 to play Roanoke trailed by four, 25-21. As the teams entered the locker room at half, Shenandoah held a five point, 34-29 lead.
To open the second half, Amponsah hit a trey, followed by a Eacho layup to tie the game at the 18:53 mark. The Hornets built a small lead again, but Roanoke took their first lead of the half at 13:24 as Smith hit a layup to lead 42-41. Just as the Maroons claimed the lead, Shenandoah went on a 11-2 lead to go up by nine, 52-43. With 7:17 to play, the Hornets held their largest lead of 11, 58-47. Roanoke sparked a streak of their own, as Eacho and Daniels aided the Maroons in a 15-3 run that would give Roanoke a 62-61 lead with just 55 seconds to play. Ramirez hit a free throw with 31 seconds on the clock to put Roanoke ahead by two. Shenandoah had one last opportunity to take the game, but a missed three pointer at :15, and two Daniels' free throws, sealed the ODAC contest for Roanoke in a 65-61 win on Saturday.
Jared Carithers led the hornets in scoring, tallying 17 points on the afternoon. Eli McEathron and Dante Seraile followed Carithers, scoring nine points each. Sharif Almulla led the Hornets on the glass, pulling down six rebounds.
Shenandoah outshot Roanoke 38 to 35 percent from the field, and held the edge 29 to 26 percent from behind the arc. The Maroons won the battle at the free throw line, as Roanoke made 26 to Shenandoah's 13.
The Maroons return to action on Wednesday, February 13
th as they host Washington & Lee in the Bast Center. Tip-off for the game is scheduled for 7:00 PM
