LEXINGTON - The Ronaoke College women's basketball team fell to Washington and Lee University on Tuesday evening, 67-63. The Maroons now have a record of 2-4; 0-2 ODAC, while the Generals now sit with a mark of 2-3; 1-1 in ODAC play.
Despite the loss, the Maroons still hold a 32-7 all-time record against the Generals. Roanoke's last victory over Washington and Lee was on January 22
nd of this year as they won 58-47.
Paxton Gwin and
Tatum McKee each scored a team-high 12 points in the contest. The pair shot an identical 4-11 from the field, along with both pulling down six rebounds. McKee was 2-3 from behind the arc, while Gwin was 3-4 from the free throw line.
Laurel Hankins hit a three pointer the first two times down the floor for the Maroons, giving Roanoke a 6-2 lead in the first two minutes of the game. Four minutes into the game, Roanoke had built an 11-8 lead off of a
Tatum McKee three pointer. After Bridgett Holleran hit a pair of free throws at 14:14, Roanoke had put together what would be its largest lead of the game, six points, 15-9. Over the next six minutes, Washington an Lee went on a 10-0 run to take the lead for the first time in the contest. With 1:07 left in the half, the Generals led by five points, 29-24.
Kelsey Smith scored the final points of the half with a layup, as Roanoke finished the first 20 minutes trailing by three, 29-26.
McKee tied the game out of the gate in the second half, draining a three to tie the game at 29-29. The Generals proceeded to go on a 7-0 run, starting with a Shelbi Hendricks trey. After a Gwin layup, Washington and Lee went on another 6-0 run to expand the lead to 11, 42-31. By the 10:52 mark, the Generals were up by 13, their largest lead of the game. It was at that point, the Maroons started to turn the game around. The Maroons hit five layups in a row, plus a
Hannah Ward free throw to pull within two, 51-49 with 7:59 to play. After Washington and Lee hit a pair of three pointers and a jump shot, the Generals went back up by 10, 59-49. A 9-2 run by the Maroons through the 1:05 mark, Roanoke got back within five. However, the Generals kept the distance through the remainder of the contest, as the Maroons fell 67-63
Laurel Hankins finished with eight points on the night, dishing out four assists.
Hannah Ward was fourth in scoring on the squad with seven points.
Cary Beahm tied Gwin and McKee in rebounds with six.
The Generals outshot the Maroons 46.6 to 35.8 percent from the field. They also held a 50.0 to 30.0 percent advantage from behind the arc. Rebounds were fairly even for the night, as Washington and Lee had 41 to Roanoke's 40. The Maroons benefited from 21 points off the bench, while the Generals only tallied seven.
The Maroons return to action on Saturday, December 7
th as the Maroons play host to Virginia Wesleyan. That contest is scheduled for a 3:00 PM start.
