Women's Basketball Rallys in Second Half, Fall to Captains 74-70

Box Score NEWPORT NEWS - The Roanoke College women's basketball team outscored Christopher Newport 38-24 in the second half, but couldn't overcome a 18-point first half deficit as they fell 74-70 on Sunday. The Maroons now have a record of 2-3 while the Captains sit with a mark of 3-1.

Tatum McKee picked up her second 20-point game of the season, as well as her second double double. McKee finished with 20 points and 14 rebounds. Laurel Hankins and Paxton Gwin each finished the game with 18 points. For the second consecutive game, Gwin was one rebound shy of a double double, finishing with nine boards. Anna Cater was third in rebounds with seven, while Kanisha Wiley dished out a team high four assists.

The Captains started the first half out on a 14-3 run over the first five minutes, with Roanoke's only points coming from a Gwin layup and McKee free throw. The Maroons outscored the Captains 8-5 over the next five minutes, including five points from McKee and three free throws. With 5:40 to play in the half, Roanoke trailed by 12, 34-22, and the Captains' lead continued to widen. Roanoke only scored 10 more points through the end of the period, with seven of those being made free throws. As the two teams entered the locker room at half, the Maroons trailed 50-32.

Christopher Newport's Jordan Miller hit a trey to open the second half, giving the Captains their largest lead of the contest, 21. However, that lead would not hold for long, as the Maroons turned on the heat in the second half. Roanoke started on a 10-0 run through the 16:17 mark, cutting the deficit to 11, 53-42. After the Captains hit back to back baskets, Roanoke went on another 8-1 run, capped by a McKee layup to get within eight 59-51. With 6:25 to play, another McKee layup closed the gap to five points, 65-60. The Captains extended the lead back to 10 by the 2:20 mark in the contest. Hankins quickly hit a basket to bring it back to eight. After a CNU free throw, Hankins knocked down a three pointer to get within six. Roanoke forced a turnover on the Captains, and Gwin made a layup as time expired, but the Maroons couldn't close the gap as they fell 74-70 to Christopher Newport.

Christopher Newport narrowly outshot Roanoke, 33.8 to 30.2 percent from the field. Roanoke held the advantage at the free throw line, hitting 72.2 to 66.7 percent. The Maroons hit 26 of 36 free throws on the afternoon. The Maroons also held the rebound advantage 53-47. Almost half (35) of Christopher Newport's points came off the bench in the Captain's win.

The Maroons return to action on Tuesday, November 26th as they travel to Lexington to take on Washington and Lee in their second ODAC contest of the season. That game is scheduled for a 7:00 PM start.
