Maroons Drop ODAC Opener to Randolph-Macon on Saturday

Box Score ASHLAND - The Roanoke College women's basketball team fell in their Old Dominion Athletic Conference opener to Randolph-Macon on Saturday afternoon, 105-81. The Maroons now sit with a record of 2-2; 0-1 ODAC, while the Yellow Jackets hold a steady record of 5-0; 1-0 in ODAC play.

Kelsey Smith led the Maroons in scoring, netting 16 points, shooting 5-9 from the field. She was 2-2 from behind the arc and pulled down five rebounds. Laurel Hankins put up 15 points against the Yellow Jackets, hitting 7-8 from the free throw line. Paxton Gwin was one rebound short of a double-double, as she finished with 12 points and nine rebounds. She also led the team in steals with three. The fourth Maroon in double digits was Bridget Holleran, who finished with 10 points. Holleran has scored 10 or more points in her last two games.

The Maroons led early against the Yellow Jackets, taking an 8-3 lead in the first minute of play. Tatum McKee and Kelsey Smith both hit threes in the run.

Roanoke led by as many as six in the first four minutes, and with 15:46 on the clock, had a one point 16-15 lead. The next five minutes saw three lead changes, ultimately with Randolph-Macon taking a 20-19 advantage. After the Yellow Jackets hit another basket, Markia Beckwith hit a layup to cut the deficit back to one. Randolph-Macon went on a 9-2 run through the 7:43 mark, taking a 31-23 lead. In the final two minutes of the half, Kelsey Smith and Paxton Gwin tallied for Roanoke's five points over that span, as the Maroons entered the locker room trailing 48-34.

Gwin scored the first three points of the second half, pulling the Maroons back within 11, 48-37, with 19:01 to play. The Yellow Jackets held Roanoke scoreless after that through the 16:20 mark, taking a 21-point, 58-37 lead. With 13:29 on the clock, Roanoke started to get hot, as they outscored the Yellow Jackets 9-2 over the next 1:30. With 10:00 to play, Laurel Hankins hit a jump shot, as the Maroons trailed by 20. As Roanoke fought in the final 10 minutes of the half, Randolph-Macon's lead remained around 24, which was the final difference, as Roanoke fell 105-81 to Randolph-Macon.

Roanoke shot 32.4 percent from the field, while Randolph-Macon hit a little over half of its shots on the night (51.5%). The Yellow Jackets led in rebounding, 51-44, while also leading in turnovers 18-16. Over a quarter of Roanoke's points (22), came off of turnovers, while Randolph-Macon had eight.

The Maroons return to action on Sunday, November 24th as they travel to Newport News, VA to take on Christopher Newport. That non-conference game is scheduled for a 12:00 PM start.
