Maroons Fall To Monarchs in Non-Conference Game, 78-64

Box Score FAYETTEVILLE, NC – The Roanoke College men's basketball team fell in non-conference action on Tuesday evening to Methodist University, 78-64.  The Maroons now have a record of 1-2, while the Monarchs hold the same 1-2 mark on the season.
 
The Maroons have an all-time record of 4-2 when playing against the Monarchs.  The last time these two teams met was in the NCAA Tournament back in 1996-1997 season.
 
John Fitchett had his best scoring night of his first three games as a Maroon, netting 14 points on 5 of 10 shooting.  He also finished with four rebounds and one block.  Daniel Eacho finished the contest with 12 points and five rebounds.  Also in double digits for Roanoke was Cameron Smith, tallying 11 points and tied Julian Ramirez for a team high eight rebounds.  Ramirez who averages 6.5 assists per game, dished out another six against the Monarchs.  Ethan Humphries had a career-high six rebounds, as well as posting three assists and three steals.
 
Methodist's Bryan Hockaday hit two consecutive baskets to start the game with a 4-0 advantage.  Daniel Eacho and Julian Ramirez each scored to pull the Maroons back within one in the first three minutes of play.  Over the next four minutes, Methodist held a six-point advantage, until Cameron Smith hit a layup to cut the deficit to four, 15-11.  The Monarchs went on a 7-0 run, pulling ahead by 11.  A Basket by Marcus Scott and a three pointer by Seth Bradley pulled the Maroons back in the contest with eight minutes to play in the half.  However, the Monarchs pulled away through the remainder of the half, entering the locker room with a 41-33 lead.
 
The Maroons tied the game at 55-55 with 10:32 to play in the second half, after a strong 14-2 run, which included threes by Fitchett and Smith.  After the Monarchs took the lead again, Daniel Eacho hit two layups to tie the game up at 59-59.  At 7:42, Julian Ramirez hit a jumper to give the Maroons their first lead of the game, 61-59.  Roanoke maintained their two point lead over the next three minutes, until Methodist's TJ Gill hit a trey with 4:20 to play.  Gill's three-pointer sparked a 14-1 run for the Monarchs that ran through the end of the contest, as Methodist picked up the 78-64 win.
 
The Monarchs outshot the Maroons 42.2 to 30.3 percent from the field, as well as 41.2 to 25.0 percent from behind the arc.  The Maroons shot 14-20 (70%) from the free throw line.  Roanoke outrebounded Methodist 37-43, while also leading in second chance points, 23-10.
 
The Maroons return to action on Monday, November 25th as they host their home opener against Greensboro College.  That contest is scheduled for a 7:00 PM tip-off.
