GREENSBORO, NC - Roanoke College head coach Susan Dunagan now sits one game away from win number 600 after the women's basketball team defeated Alma College 83-68 on Saturday. The Maroons start the season with a 1-0 record after their win in the Marriott Invitational held by Guilford College.
Susan Dunagan now sits with 599 wins in her 33 year career at Roanoke College. At the start of the season, there are only 45 coaches from NCAA Divisions I, II and III who have surpassed this milestone.
Tatum McKee led the Maroons in nearly every category on the evening, putting away 24 points on the night, a career high for the junior. She shot 7-12 from the field, 3-4 from behind the arc, and hit 7-12 free throws on the evening. McKee also had 10 rebounds, marking the Maroons first double-double of the season. She also tallied team highs in assists (4) and steals (3).
Roanoke took a 4-0 lead out of the gate after a free throw from McKee and a trey from
Paxton Gwin. The Maroons maintained their lead through the first nine minutes of the game, in which McKee scored seven total points. At 11:27, the Scots' Mallory Pruett knocked down a three pointer to go ahead 17-16. Alma held on to the advantage, building their biggest lead of the game of six points by the 7:59 mark in the period. Roanoke tied the game up at 26-26 after a layup by
Markia Beckwith and four points from
Bridget Holleran. The two teams went back and forth through the half, as Roanoke and Alma were tied 37-37 through the first 20 minutes.
The Scots jumped on the Maroons early, taking a quick 40-39 lead. However, that would be Alma's final lead of the contest.
Kelsey Smith knocked down a three to reclaim the 42-40 lead. Gwin and McKee each added threes of their own, and the Maroons were up by eight, 50-42. Roanoke rattled off a 20-4 since the last time they trailed, taking a 60-46 advantage with 13 minutes to play in the second half.
Over the next four minutes, the Maroons only scored six points, all coming from free throws. That streak came to an end at 7:38 when McKee and
Laurel Hankins drained a pair of threes, extending the Maroons lead to 16, 72-56. The Maroons held on to that lead through the remainder of the contest, as Roanoke picked up its first victory of the season, 83-68 over Alma.
Paxton Gwin finished the contest with 14 points, four rebounds and two assists. She was followed by
Kelsey Smith, who tallied 11 points, four rebounds and shot 4-7 from the field.
Markia Beckwith led the Maroons in rebounds, pulling down five on the night.
Kanisha Wiley followed suit with five rebounds of her own.
Alma held the advantage in shooting percentage, leading 40.6 to 37.9 percent from the field. Roanoke outshot the Scots 40 to 29.4 percent from the arc, as well as 70.5 to 68.8 percent from the free throw line. Alma had a narrow edge in rebounds over the Maroons 44-43.
The Maroons return to action on Sunday, taking on York College (NY) in their second game of the Marriott Invitational. That contest is scheduled for a 1:00 PM start.
