LYNCHBURG – Sophomore
Ashley Barnes tied a school record by scoring four goals in the Roanoke women's soccer 6-0 win over Randolph College on Tuesday. The Maroons, who have won three straight, have a record of 5-6-1, 3-3 ODAC, while the WildCats have a mark of 3-9, 1-6 in ODAC play.
Barnes' four goals on the night tied a school record for goals in a game. The other holders of the record include Olympic cyclist Shelley Olds '03 and Margaret Houston '10. The Maroons hold an all-time 35-1 record against Randolph College and have won the last 34 meetings between the two teams. The Maroons, who has won their last three games, did so by outscoring their opponents 15-0. The last time Roanoke has won three straight shutouts by 15 goals or more was in 2007 when Roanoke defeated Emory & Henry (3-0), Guilford (6-0) and Hollins (8-0) for a 17-0 margin of victory.
The Maroons fired early and often against the WildCats, outshooting Randolph 21-3 in the first half. Roanoke's first goal came at the 15:45 mark as
Ashley Barnes scored on a one-touch through ball from
Courtney Yoke. Barnes scored the second goal as well as she headed the ball past the keeper off of a free kick from
Lauren Roth. Roth's assist was the first of her career. After 45 minutes, Roanoke held a 2-0 advantage.
Roanoke came out swinging again in the second half, as Barnes was at it again. Just five minutes into the period, Barnes scored off of a cross from
Kara Kapell to give the Maroons a 3-0 lead. Barnes scored her fourth and final goal in the 60
th minute as
Courtney Yoke picked up her second assist of the night by crossing a ball across the front of the goal. Roanoke's fifth goal came from ODAC Player of the Week,
Nathalie Torres.
Lauren O'Brien sent a ball into the box for Torres to put away. O'Brien was on other end of the ball for Roanoke's final goal, as she scored a deep ball over the defense, with an assist from
Anna Carter. Roanoke took home their third consecutive victory after defeating Randolph, 6-0.
Roanoke outshot Randolph 36-7, holding a shots on goal advantage of 17-5 as well. Barnes led the team in shots with nine, five of which were on goal and four found the back of the net. She was followed in shots by
Nathalie Torres and
Lauren O'Brien with five shots each.
Courtney Yoke led the Maroons in assists on the night with two each.
Carolyn Sarbacher played 45 minutes in net and facing three shots and tallying three saves.
The Maroons return to action on Saturday, October 12
th as they play host to Virginia Wesleyan at Kerr Stadium. That contest is scheduled for a 1:00 PM start.
