SALEM – The Roanoke College women's soccer team defeated Emory & Henry, 1-0 at Kerr Stadium over fall break. The Maroons now have a record of 7-6-1; 5-3 ODAC, while the Wasps are 3-11-1, 3-5-1 in the ODAC.
Roanoke has an all-time record of 15-2 against Emory & Henry, winning the last two games in the series. Roanoke has posted five consecutive shutouts against its opponents, winning by a combined total of 19-0. Tonight's game also marked a first in Maroon history, as
Carolyn Sarbacher is the first goalie in school history to tally an assist.
The two teams remained scoreless through the first 57 minutes of the contest. It was at the 57:14 mark where
Courtney Yoke received a pass all the way from goalkeeper
Carolyn Sarbacher for the go ahead goal. The Roanoke defense went on to prove why it has posted five straight shutouts. At the 60-minute mark, the Wasps' Blair Vaughn shot and hit the crossbar, followed up with a header that was saved knocked away by
Kaitlyn Manning. The Roanoke defense held off the Wasps for the remainder of the contest to pick up the 1-0 victory.
The Maroons outshot Emory & Henry 13-5.
Ashley Barnes and
Kara Kapell Led the Maroons with three shots each, while
Lauren O'Brien and
Courtney Yoke each finished with two.
Carolyn Sarbacher played all 90 mintues in goal and tallied two saves.
The Maroons return to action on Sunday, October 20
th as they travel to ODAC opponent, Bridgewater College. That contest is scheduled for a 2:00 PM start.
