Women's Basketball Nipped by Generals 69-59 on Friday

Box Score LEXINGTON – The Roanoke Women's Basketball team fell in Old Dominion Athletic Conference action to Washington and Lee, 69-59 on Friday night.  The Maroons fall to 4-13, 4-9 in ODAC play, while the Generals rise to 8-11, 6-8 overall.

Washington and Lee jumped out to an early lead in the first half, going up by as many as eight points when Becca Bolton dropped in a layup for the 15-7 advantage.

However, the Maroons were able to whittle down the deficit at the 15-minute mark as Tatum McKee laid one in to give the Maroons a 23-22 lead.  Roanoke was able to build a lead of as many as five points, on two different occasions, off baskets from Paxton Gwin and Taylor Duggins.

The Generals did not go away lightly in the first half, as they were able to pull back and take the lead once more off a Katy Wilson jumper.  But, Roanoke tied things up at the end of the first stanza, hitting the locker rooms tied at 33 a piece.

Roanoke came out of the half looking to regain the lead they had multiple times in the first half, as Gwin scored just moments into the period.  The Maroons were only able to build the lead to three points after a McKee free throw, just a minute into the second half.

Washington and Lee built a lead that extended to eight points through the eight-minute mark.  The Maroons were not down and out however, with 7:12 left in the contest, they proceeded to go on an 8-2 run that cut the Generals' lead to two, 56-54.  That surge would not get them over the hump as W&L spent the final three minutes outscoring Roanoke 13-5.  The Generals gained this victory on their home floor, 69-59.

Washington and Lee outshot Roanoke 42.6% to 37.5% from the floor, while the Maroons held a narrow edge from the free throw line, 66% to 64%.  W&L also outrebounded the Maroons 44-34 but Roanoke had a large margin in steals 11-5.

Gwin led the Maroons with 16 points and nine rebounds, narrowly missing her third double-double of the season.  McKee followed behind Gwin with nine points and five rebounds.

For Washington and Lee, five of their seven players who saw action scored in double figures, including Becca Bolton who led the team with 14 points and 12 rebounds.  Also picking up a double-double for the Generals was Katy Wilson with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

The Maroons will return to action on Saturday, February 3rd as they play host to Eastern Mennonite during Roanoke's Winterfest.  That contest is scheduled to begin at 4:00 PM.
