HAMPDEN-SYDNEY - The Roanoke College men's basketball team had a tough second half against Hampden-Sydney on Saturday, falling in Old Dominion Athletic Conference action 100-62.
Andrew Daniels led Roanoke (4-3; 0-3 ODAC) in scoring with 14 points, the only Maroon in double-digits.
Jordan Thacker followed with nine points, while
Daniel Eacho and
Kwasi Amponsah each scored eight points. Amponsah is just four points shy of scoring his 1,000
th point in his career.
Cameron Smith was the top rebounder for Roanoke with eight boards, while Eacho pulled down seven.
Hampden-Sydney (8-1; 3-0 ODAC) was led by Cam Anderson who put up 12 points, hitting 4-6 from the field. Sasha Obradovic finished the contest with 11, while Greg Lewis tallied 10. The Tigers' top rebounder was Harrison George who pulled down seven boards.
The Tigers jumped out to an early lead, but Roanoke was able to capture the advantage at the 16:56 mark in the first half with a pair of free throws from Amponsah. The Maroons built their lead to as many as five as
Ethan Humphries hit a layup at the 15:15 mark. But just a few minutes later, Hampden-Sydney recaptured the lead at 16-15 with 12:13 to play, then went on an 8-2 run to expand the lead to 23-17. The Tigers held the lead for the remainder of the half, but Amponsah hit a trey at the end of the period to bring the Maroons within 10, 43-33.
The Maroons had a tough go in the second half, as Hampden-Sydney opened on an 18-2 run, leading 61-35 with just 14:36 to play. The Maroons continued to battle back in the half, but could not close the gap. The Tigers went on a 19-5 run that ended at the 5:55 mark as the Maroons trailed 89-50.
The Tigers outshot the Maroons 52.6 to 38.2 percent from the field, while the margin was narrow in free throws, with Hampden-Sydney leading 61.1 to 60.9 percent. The two teams tied in the rebound department, pulling down 38 boards a piece. However, In assists, Hampden-Sydney dished out 22 to Roanoke's 10. Also, the Maroons turned over the ball 25 times to the Tigers' nine.
The Maroons return to action on Saturday, December 15
th as they travel to Danville, Va. to face Averett University in non-conference action. That contest is scheduled for a noon tip-off.
