Amponsah Scores 1,000th Point in 97-87 Win over Averett

Box Score DANVILLE - Kwasi Amponsah scored his 1,000th career point in Roanoke's 97-87 victory over Averett University on Saturday afternoon. The Maroons are now 5-3 while the Cougars hold a record of 3-5.

Amponsah finished the contest with 14 points, which now gives the senior 1,010 points in his four years at Roanoke College. He is the 34th Maroon to accomplish the feat in school history. He also finished the contest with four rebounds, four assists and three steals.

It was a career day for two other Maroons, Julian Ramirez and Andrew Daniels. Ramirez finished the contest with career-highs in points (27), three-pointers (5) and field goals made (9). Ramirez also finished the contest with seven assists. Daniels tallied a career-high 21 points, along with career marks in three pointers (3) and field goals made (8).

Roanoke jumped out to an early 11-6 lead in the contest that included three three-pointers from Ramirez. Averett worked its way back into the contest by the 8:03 mark, pulling within one 26-25. However Roanoke rebuilt the lead back to eight as Amponsah hit a jumper, followed by five more points by Ramirez to go up 33-25 with 6:14 to play. The Cougars took their second lead of the game with 4:09 to play in the period after Justin Pierce made a free throw to go up 37-36. While the Maroons would rebuild the lead back to six, 49-43, Averett closed the half on a 9-1 run, and at the end of the first half, Averett led 51-50.

Roanoke ultimately took the lead at 15:15 to play in the second half, as Daniels hit a three pointer to go up 65-62. Daniels' trey sparked an 11-2 run that ran through the 11:58 mark, with Roanoke up 73-64. Matt Moats hit a layup at 8:32 to put Roanoke up by 10. However, Averett cut the deficit to four, 81-77, over the next minute. Daniels scored seven points for the Maroons to go up 91-83 with 4:31 to play. The Maroons would hold on to the lead and finish the contest ahead 97-87.

The Maroons outshot the Cougars 55.4 to 39.7 percent, while also leading behind the arc 58.8 to 18.5 percent. Averett outrebounded Roanoke 46-39, while the Maroons led in assists 21-9.

The Maroons return to action on December 19-20 as the team travels to play in the Daytona Beach Shootout. They will play Marymount on Wednesday, December 19th, and then Oglethorpe on Thursday, December 20th. Tip-off for both games is scheduled for 8:00 PM.
