SALEM --- When Roanoke College officially ushers in the 2012-13 campaign on Nov.16, it will mark a monumental milestone in the program's history as the 100th season of basketball makes its debut.
The year-long celebration will highlight great Maroon moments, such as the historical “Five Smart Boys” that garnered a bid to the NIT Tournament for the first time in school history in 1939, the 1983 team that advanced to the Final Four and the 1972 team that won the NCAA Championship. And that's just a small sampling.
In addition, every home game at the Bast Center will feature an honorary captain, while selected games will offer promotional items for fans during the action.
"100 is a special number and it presents the perfect opportunity for us to celebrate our basketball history here at Roanoke College," Roanoke Athletics Director Scott Allison said. "We've had a lot of great moments involving many, many players and coaches, and I know our alumni and fans are looking forward to celebrate this special time."
Yet, if there's one facet of this celebration that personifies this highly-anticipated event, it's the All-Century team that is comprised of 25 players selected from a panel of former coaches, media members, current basketball staff members and athletic personnel.
The panel was presented with over 60 nominees from which the 20 finalists were chosen. It's an outstanding group of former players that represent all decades dating back from the 1950s and includes such great names as
Frankie Allen '71, Jay Piccola '74, Hal Johnston '72, Gerald Holmes '83 , Hilliary Scott '94, Bob Leib '39, Morris Cregger '64, Dave Foltz '56, Tony Proietti '52 and
Ken Belton '81, just to name a few. And from this talented group of 25, fans will vote on the starting five.
But voting isn't just limited to the All-Century Team, as fans are also encouraged to select the five greatest games in school-history from a list of 10 games and the top-10 teams from 20 teams, both of which are chosen by the committee.
From the 1972 National Championship game against Akron to the 2000 ODAC Tournament championship matchup with Hampden-Sydney, not to mention the 1996 NCAA Tournament game against Shenandoah or the 1983 win again Clark to punch the Maroons' ticket to the Final Four, selected were memorable games fans have talked about for decades.
While voting for the All-Century Team, “Top-Five Teams” or "Greatest Games" fans can click the names and individual game selections for detailed information. To actually cast the votes, simply click the players' box or the games into the designated boxes, with the final results to be announced in April.
