Piek Hat Trick Aids Maroons In Victory over Virginia Wesleyan, 5-1

Box Score VIRGINIA BEACH – Marceline Piek scored a hat-trick on Friday to give Roanoke College field hockey its second Old Dominion Athletic Conference win of the season after defeating Virginia Wesleyan 5-1 on the road.

The Maroons now hold a record of 3-8, 2-3 ODAC while the Marlins are now 3-8, 1-3 in ODAC play.  Roanoke is now 15-8 all-time against Virginia Wesleyan, with the two teams trading wins over the last eight meetings.

Devon Huddleston got the scoring started for the Maroons scoring from just five yards out on the left side at 8:37, giving Roanoke the 1-0 lead.  Just less than two minutes later, Marceline Piek scored her first goal of the evening from the right side of the cage to go up 2-0 on the Marlins.  The Maroons wouldn't score again for another 15 minutes until Kelly Finn netted one from right in front of the goal.  After the first 35, Roanoke led 3-0.

Piek struck quickly in the second half, scoring her second goal on a breakaway just 2:55 into the second period.  Two minutes later, Piek completed her hat-trick off an assist from Julienne Brown, increasing the Maroons lead to 5-0.  The Marlins scored their lone goal late in the second half, as Taylor Lober took a pass from Amelia Goebel during a penalty corner, to cut their deficit to 5-1, which proved to be the final score.

Piek's three goals make her Roanoke's leading scorer for the season with five goals, Finn now holds second with four.  Piek also led the team in shots with seven, followed by Finn and Huddleston who had two each.  The Maroons outshot the Marlins 17-11, and led shots on goal (11-3).  Virginia Wesleyan held the margin in both penalty corners (7-5) and saves (6-2).

The Maroons return to action on Wednesday, October 10th, as they play host to Eastern Mennonite University at Donald J. Kerr Stadium.  That contest is scheduled for a 7:00 PM start.
