Second Half Goal Gives Roanoke 2-1 Victory over Eastern Mennonite

Box Score HARRISONBURG - The Roanoke College men's soccer team defeated Eastern Mennonite, 2-1 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference action on Friday. The Maroons are now 6-3-1, 4-1-1 in ODAC play, while the Royals stand with a record of 6-7-1, 3-3 ODAC.

Roanoke is 40-14-5 all-time against Eastern Mennonite and has won the last four meetings between the two teams.

The action started hot early as the Royals' Christian Rhine went on a 1-on-3 breakaway to score at the 8:38 mark of the first half. EMU's 1-0 lead would not hold for more than 19 second, as Garrett Eldridge scored the equalizer off of a double-assist from Mark Strelow and Patrick Bain, trying the game at 1-1.

Neither team could find the back of the net for the remainder of the first half. However, as it did in the first half, scoring happened early in the second period. Mark Strelow cut a shot inside the right side of the goal to give the Maroons the 2-1 lead just 3:22 into the second half. Both teams got chances at the net during the second half, but neither team would score again, giving Roanoke the 2-1 victory over EMU.

Roanoke outshot Eastern Mennonite 20-13, with Tyler Carbaugh leading the team with six shots, followed by Brian White with four. The Royals' Christian Rhine finished the game with four shots. The Maroons also held a slight edge in corner kicks, 5-4. Cole Sinclair played all 90 minutes in goal and made eight saves on 13 shots faced.

The Maroons return to action on Wednesday, October 10th as they play host to Shenandoah University at Donald J. Kerr Stadium. That contest is scheduled for a 4:30 PM start.
