Women's Soccer Falls 4-1 Against #5 Virginia Wesleyan

Box Score VIRGINIA BEACH - The Roanoke College women's soccer team dropped an Old Dominion Athletic Conference contest to #5 ranked Virginia Wesleyan. The Maroons now hold a record of 9-6-2, 7-3-1 ODAC, while the Marlins are 16-0-1, 11-0-1 in ODAC play.

The Maroons are 13-18-2 all-time against the Marlins, with Roanoke's last win against Virginia Wesleyan in 2011, when the Marlins were ranked #10.

Action started early in the contest as the Marlins' Christina Fernandes scored off a cross from Breanne Ingargiola at just 5:08 in the first half. Two minutes later, Carmen Graves scored the equalizer, as she headed the ball over the keeper off a pass from Stephanie Parenteau.

Virginia Wesleyan returned the favor just 24 seconds later, as Fernandes scored her second goal, putting the Marlins ahead 2-1. At 12:18, Ingargiola scored a goal of her own, unassisted, and giving Virginia Wesleyan a 3-1 lead. The Marlins would score one more time at 58:35 in the second half, as Jessica Edelman put home the final goal of the game, giving the #5 team in the NCAA a 4-1 victory.

The Maroons were outshot 18-4, and trailed in corner kicks 4-2. Rebekah Adams led Roanoke in Shots with two, while Graves and Lauren Roth each had one. Carolyn Sarbacher tallied five saves during her 90 minutes between the posts.

The Maroons return to action on Tuesday, October 23rd as Roanoke plays host to Randolph-Macon in its final regular season contest. Roanoke and Randolph-Macon are fifth and sixth in the ODAC, respectively, which makes the game more important for tournament seeding. That contest is scheduled for a 4:00 PM start.
