DANVILLE --- Brian White (Virginia Beach, VA, First Colonial) scored in the 106
th minute to give #25 Roanoke a 1-0 double-overtime victory over Averett in non-conference action. The Maroons improve to 7-2-1 while the Cougars slip to 6-2-1.
White, a sophomore forward, sent his only shot of the game on target, which deflected off the goalkeepers' hands and into the back of the net for his team-best fifth goal of the season. It was Averett's first home loss of the season.
Roanoke, which owns an 11-5-1 series record Averett, outshot the Cougars, 26-11, including 8-4 in shots on goal. The Maroons held a 12-3 advantage on corner kicks. RC remains unbeaten in the last seven meetings against its in-state foe.
Avery Makel (Nellysford, VA, Nelson County) collected four saves in the win for RC, while Nate Barker finished with seven for AU.
Drew Claytor (Greensboro, NC, Grimsley) led the Maroons with five shots, followed by
Jordan Troyer (Columbia, SC, The Hammond School) who had three shots on goal.
The men return home this Friday, Sept. 30 as they host ODAC-foe Eastern Mennonite at Kerr Stadium. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
