Box Score SALEM - Roanoke overcame a 2-1 halftime deficit and rallied to defeat Virginia Wesleyan, 3-2 on Saturday. The Maroons move to 6-2-1, 3-0-1 ODAC, while the Marlins are 3-6-1, 1-0 in ODAC play.

Both teams spent most of the first half feeling each other out until the 20 minute mark as Wesleyan's Josh Richardson found the back of the net, giving the Marlins a 1-0 lead. The Marons were quick to answer as a minute later, Brian White (Virginia Beach, VA, First Colonial) chipped one off the hands and over the goalkeeper to tie the game at 1-1. Virginia Wesleyan came back just two minutes later as John McKenzie took a shot from the top of the box and found the right side of the goal to give the Marlins the 2-1 lead.

Virginia Wesleyan's lead stood until the 68 minute as Christopher Fisher (Morehead City, NC, West Carteret High School) used his tricky footwork get around defenders and cross a ball to Carl Leist (Christiansburg, VA, Christiansburg) who tapped it in to tie the game at 2-2. Roanoke would score eight minues later when Mark Strelow (Roanoke, VA, Hidden Valley High School) headed a ball to the top of the box to Johnny Hughes (Salem, VA, Salem) who fired one in the right side of the goal to take the 3-2 lead. Hughes' goal would be the ultimate game winner.

Virginia Wesleyan outshot Roanoke 11-8 but trailed to the Maroons in corner kicks 4-2. Avery Makel (Nellysford, VA, Nelson County)finished the game with four saves.

The Maroons will return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 28 as they travel to Danville, Va. to face Averett. The game is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m.
