The Roanoke Volleyball team dropped a pair of matches in consecutive nights to non-conference foe, Southern Virginia (3-0) and ODAC-rival Lynchburg, 3-1. The Maroons record now stands at 3-10 overall, 1-1 in the ODAC.
The Maroons were swept by Southern Virginia with scores of 25-17, 25-23 and 25-19 on Tuesday evening in Buena Vista at “The Barn.” The Kights (8-2) were led by Camille Tua with seven digs and seven kills followed by Nicole Gwynn who had 25 assists and seven digs on the night.
Sarah Long (Midlothian, VA, Midlothian High School) led Roanoke with nine kills and seven digs.
Shannon Stone (Williamsburg, VA, Lafayette) added 15 assists while
Rachel Hawkins (Winchester, VA, Millbrook) contributed six kills and two block assists on the evening for the Maroons.
Against Lynchburg, the Maroons faired better as they battled with their conference-foe, but fell with scores of 25-23, 19-25, 14-25 and 17-25. The Hornets (9-1, 4-0 ODAC), were guided by Aricquel Payne and Rebecca Loftis, who combined for 29 kills. Rachel Turk and Brooke Moughon also combined for 45 assists as Molly Deacon and Casey Parrish notched 18 and 15 digs, respectively.
Stone had 15 assists and eight digs while newcomer
Jordan Haga (Gladys, VA, William Campbell High School) finished with a career-high 14 digs on the night.
Mackenzie Allen (Zuni, VA, Windsor High School) led the Maroons with 12 digs while Long chipped in a balanced attack with 11 kills and 11 digs.
Kelsey Largen (Roanoke, VA, Cave Spring) wound up with 10 kills and seven digs.
Largen passed
Molly Zigler '01 for eighth in career digs at Roanoke. She needs three more kills to pass former teammate and 2011 graduate
Maggie Wagner for fifth on the all-time list. Stone needs 12 more assists to pass
Kelly Valoris '03 for sixth on the career list.
The women will play again on Tuesday, Sept. 27 as they square off again Randolph College in ODAC action. The match is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
