Maroons Drop Non-Conference Contest to Mary Washington

Box Score SALEM - Roanoke fell to #12 Mary Washington, 7-3 in non-conference action at Kerr Stadium Wednesday afternoon. The Maroons are now 0-5 on the season, while the Eagles improved to 5-0.

The Maroons went after the Eagles early in the contest, scoring the game's first goal in the sixth minute.  Lee Sheldon (Darien, CT, Darien) recieved a pass from Laura Stavetski (Wayne, PA, Radnor) off a penalty corner and placed it in the back of the goal to take a 1-0 lead.

Roanoke held their ground until the 18th minute of the game when Mary Washington's Caitlin Baker placed a shot in the goal to tie the game.  Lisa Charney and Florence George each scored a goal before the end of the first half to give the Eagles a 3-1 lead.

The Maroons stared the second half just as strong as they did the first as Mariel Hunt (Rumsan, NJ, Rumsan Fair Haven) netted a goal off a Julienne Brown (Orange, VA, Foxcroft School) pass in the first minute cutting the deficit to 3-2.  Charney scored two more goals for the Eagles, increasing their lead to 5-2.  Morgan scored Mary Washington's final two goals in the 61st and 63rd minute to give the Eagles a 7-2 lead.

The Maroons fought back in the final minutes as Stacy Bechtel (Eldersburg, MD, Liberty) picked up her first career goal for the Maroons and ultimately the last goal of the contest.

Mary Washington outshot the Maroons 29-6.  Roanoke goalkeeper Cristina Scichilone (South Yarmouth, MA, Nauset Regional) played all 70 minutes and made 13 saves.

The Maroons play their next home contest against Stevenson on Sept. 18 at Donald J. Kerr Stadium.  The contest is set to begin at 12:00 PM.
