Men's Basketball Closes 2011 with 81-63 Victory Over Covenant

Box Score SALEM - The Roanoke Men's Basketball team capped off the 2011 half of their season with an 81-63 victory over Covenant. Roanoke raises their overall record to 3-6, while Covenant falls to 4-7.

Roanoke jumped out to an early 9-2 lead with Logan Singleton earning six of the Maroon's first nine points. The Scots went on a 9-2 run of their own tying the score at 11-11 at the 13:32 mark. However, Clay Lacy hit a jumper just moments later to take the 13-11 lead, which would hold for the rest of the game. Over the next five minutes, Roanoke extended its lead to 32-15, which included one play where Singleton blocked two shots then crossed to the other side of the court to drain a three-pointer. Roanoke closed the first stanza with a 45-31 lead.

The second half opened just as the first had, with Singleton knocking down a jumper. Covenant would cut the lead to nine, 54-45 off a pair of Callum Sears free-throws leading to a media timeout. Out of the break, Adam Kessler opened a 7-0 run that was capped by four straight points from Kwasi Amponsah. With just four minutes left Zach Barrett and Clay Lacy hit a pair of threes to give the Maroons a 16 point lead. Roanoke finally extended the lead to 20, and Covenant hit a last second layup to give the Maroons a 18-point, 81-63 win.

Logan Singleton led the Maroons with 21 points and six rebounds. Three other Maroons finished in double-digits including, Kwasi Amponsah had 15 points, four rebounds, five steals and was perfect from the free throw line (4-4). Clay Lacy tallied 14 points, and newcomer Julian Ramirez netted 10 points with four assists and two steals.

The Maroons will return to action on January 2-3 as they play in the 2012 Morris Cregger Invitational Tournament. Roanoke will face off against Kenyon College at 5:00 PM on the 2nd and will play the winner of Shenandoah/Swarthmore at 3:00 PM on the 3rd.
