Maroons Sting Hornets on the road, 77-65

Box Score WINCHESTER, Va. --- Roanoke's strong second half was enough to pull away from Shenandoah in a 77-65 victory Saturday afternoon at Shingleton Gymnasium. The Maroons improved to 2-5 while the Hornets slipped to 1-5 on the season.

The Maroons, who improve to 15-2 against Shenandoah, which will join the ODAC next season, earned their second win of the season. Page Moir is 4-0 all-time against the Hornets.

Roanoke did it by shooting 52% (31-60) from the floor, the second time the Maroons have shot better than 50% all season. They also pulled away from the Hornets from beyond the arc, hitting 6-of-13 (46%) on the day. The men held a commanding 45-28 rebounding advantage against their in-state foe.

With four ties and nine lead changes, Roanoke outscored Shenandoah in second chance points (20-14), points in the paint (36-24) and had 16 points off 13 Hornet turnovers. The defense held them to 39% shooting on the afternoon.

Trailing Shenandoah 36-31 at the half, the Maroons mounted a strong overall second half as they took the lead for good and had a game-best and season-high 21-point lead with just under three minutes remaining.

After a Shenandoah three-pointer made it 42-36 with just over 17-minutes remaining, the Maroons went on a 32-9 run over the next 11 minutes of play to take a 17-point lead, 68-51. The men kept the Hornets away and sealed their second win of the season.

Kwasi Amponsah scored a career-best 30 points in the victory, which is the first 30-point performance by a Maroon since Logan Singleton did it last season. He shot 11-of-15 from the floor, including 3-for-3 from three-point range. Adam Kessler scored four points but pulled down a team-best and career-high 10 rebounds.

Ethan Humphries had a solid performance for the Maroons, scoring seven points, shooting 3-for-4 from the floor and dishing out a career-best eight assists. Logan Singleton chipped in 14 points and eight rebounds while Clay Lacy tossed in nine points.

The men return to action on Sunday, Dec. 18 as they travel to Fredricksburg to battle Mary Washington in non-conference action. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m.
