Men's Basketball Picks Up First Win of Season in Overtime Thriller over Goucher, 90-86

Box Score

SALEM - The Roanoke Men's Basketball team picked up its first win of the season in an overtime thriller over Goucher College, 90-86. Adam Kessler fueled the scoring in the overtime period for the Maroons with a pair of three-point baskets to keep the Gophers at bay. Roanoke moves to 1-3 on the season while Goucher drops to 0-5.

Both teams entered the contest looking for their first victory of the season. In 12 meetings between the Gophers and the Maroons, Roanoke improved its series lead to 11-1. With this win, Page Moir earned his 370th win, passing legendary ODAC coach Bob Johnson (E&H) for the most career wins by an ODAC coach.

The game was even through the first four minutes, where the teams were tied 11-11. Over the next three minutes, the Maroons fired off a 8-0 run, fueld by six points from Kwasi Amponsah, that gave them the 19-11 lead at the 13:25 mark. The Gophers did not back down at that point as they came back with a 10-3 run of their own to tie the game at 21-21. Trae Lindsay, Goucher steals leader, had five of the 10 points in that run.

With 7:00 minutes remaining in the first half, Goucher had started to pull away, with Shane Yambor hitting a pair of threes and Lindsay with a basket of his own to earn a 33-25 lead. But the lead wouldn't last long as Roanoke's Adam Kessler and Jack Hamilton hit a pair of baskets, with a Hamilton free throw to cut the deficit to one, 33-32. Hamilton, the Maroon's leader in field goal percentage (49.5%) knocked down two more baskets into a Goucher time out to earn a 36-33 lead with 4:00 to half.

The Maroons entered the locker room at halftime with a 43-37 lead after a Clay Lacy putback as time expired. Lacy and Amposah led Roanoke after the first stanza with 11 points. Logan Singleton led with seven rebounds to go with six points after the first 20 minutes of play.

Both teams caught fire late in the second half, hitting 11 consecutive baskets between the two teams over a two minute period. Kessler hit the final basket of the run to tie the game at 69-69. The two teams were scoreless for the next two minutes until Hamilton knocked down a three to end that run and earn a 72-69 lead. Goucher took the lead again when Marcus Cotton drained a jumper for a tie at 75-75.

With 26.5 seconds left the Maroons held the ball for the final shot of the game, but lost the ball in the drive, and the game headed to overtime.

The last overtime game the Maroons played was on Feb. 2, 2011 as they fell to Guilford 72-70. This marks the first overtime game between Goucher and Roanoke in the 12 game series.

Adam Kessler opened up the overtime period knocking down a three-pointer. Hamilton extended the lead to five with a putback off a Maroon miss, pushing the score to 82-77. Kessler drained another three at 2:46 to extend the lead to eight. In the first, four minutes of the overtime period Goucher only tallied one point, until Cotton drained a three with :20 left. Amponsah hit one of two free throws to build a four point lead, but Yambor returned with two points of his own to bring the game to 86-84 Roanoke. With six tenths of a second remaining, Roanoke led 88-86 with Singleton at the line. Singleton hit both free throws and put the game out of reach for Goucher, as the Maroons won 90-86.

Five Maroons finished in double figures with Amponsah leading the charge with a career-high 24 points. He also tied his career-high in assists with six, as the last time he performed that feat was against Lynchburg on Dec. 4, 2010.

Singleton followed with 20, Hamilton with 16, Lacy with 14, and Kessler earning a career-highs with 14 points and six field goals made. Hamilton also ended the game with a team-high 11 rebounds, earning his second consecutive double-double after a 20 point, 16 rebound effort at Bluefield State.

Roanoke averaged a shot percentage of 51 percent from the field, while Goucher shot just 42 percent. The Maroons also out rebounded the Gophers 46-39, but fell behind in steals with only seven to Goucher's 15.

The Maroons will return to action on Wednesday, November 30th as they travel to Lexington, Va. to face Washington and Lee in their ODAC opener. That game is scheduled to begin at 7:00 PM.
