Randolph Edges Roanoke, 2-1 in Regular Season Home Finale

Box Score SALEM --- Roanoke dropped a 2-1 decision to Randolph in its regular season home finale Saturday evening at Kerr Stadium. The Maroons slipped to 12-4-1 overall, 7-1-1 in the ODAC. The WildCats record improves to 12-5, 5-4 in conference play.

With the Eastern Mennonite loss, Roanoke claims the ODAC regular season title even with tonight's loss. It's the Maroons first regular season title since 2008. The Maroons are now 2-1-1 against Randolph.

Randolph jumped out to an early lead 10 minutes into action as Corey Sindle's 20-yard blast sailed into the left side to take the 1-0 advantage.

In the 28th minute of play, Tyler Gilchrist chipped a shot over Avery Makel (Nellysford, VA, Nelson County) which found the back of the net to take a two-goal lead. The WildCats held off the Maroon attack to go into the half with a 2-0 score.

The Maroons offense came alive in the 64th minute into the second stanza with a Jake Mercer (Raleigh, NC, St. David's ) goal off an assist from Peyton Lambert (Chesapeake, VA, Western Branch) to cut the WildCat lead in half. It was Lambert's ODAC-best seventh assist of the season.

The Maroons persisted to attack in the waning minutes, with six second-half corner kicks, but couldn't convert as Randolph won a program-best 12th match in a single-season.

Roanoke had an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks, but were edged 7-6 in shots. Carter Smith earned the win in goal, collecting three saves. Makel had two saves for the Maroons.

The men will travel to Farmville to take on Hampden-Sydney in its regular season finale Tuesday, Oct. 25 at 4 p.m.
