LEXINGTON, Va. --- Roanoke opened the game on a 26-12 in the first 11 minutes of action and never looked back in a 73-59 win over Washington and Lee at the Warner Center Wednesday evening. The Maroons improved to 7-6, 3-2 in the ODAC. The Generals, who received 22 votes in the latest D3Hoops.com Top-25 poll, dropped to 10-4, 3-3 in conference play.
With the win, Roanoke head coach Page Moir moves past the late Bob Johnson (Emory & Henry) as the winningest coach in ODAC-history with 231. The 22-year coaching veteran, who has earned all 364 career wins at Roanoke, trails the EHC coaching legend in that category by only seven to claim that mark.
Moir and his father Charlie Moir, who coached the Maroons from 1967-73 and led them to their only national title in 1972, increased the family win total at Roanoke to 497. That is nearly 40% of the 1,290 program wins in the 98-years of the storied men's basketball program.
Roanoke, which broke a two-game skid against Washington and Lee, improved its series record to 76-38. Moir is now 37-9 against the Generals, 11-5 against eighth-year coach, Adam Hutchinson, who has led the Generals to their best start since the 1988-89 season.
The Maroons, which surpassed the entire 2009-10 season win total tonight, equaled last season's ODAC win total as well with their third of the season. The men, who avenged a 75-62 loss on Dec. 1, have won three of the last four games and improve to 3-1 on the road this season. RC is now 7-0 when leading at the half and 4-0 when out-rebounding their opponents.
Three players scored in double-figures for the fifth-straight game and for the 10th time this season. RC shot 50.9% from the field, 45.5% from the three-point range (10-22) and held a 36-34 edge in the rebounding column. The Maroons currently lead the ODAC in rebounding (39.3 rpg) and second in scoring at 78.8 points per game.
Melvin Felix (Caguas, Puerto Rico, Salem) scored over 22 points for the second-straight game against the Generals to lead the Maroons. It is his fourth 20-point outing of the year as he currently is fourth in the ODAC in scoring (17.4 ppg). The Salem product tied a season-best with five three-pointers. Felix, who is 11
