SALEM, Va--- Roanoke topped Averett, 1-0 in non-conference action Wednesday evening at Kerr Stadium. The Maroons improved to 8-3, while the Cougars fell to 6-5 on the year.
In the first meeting against the Cougars since 1999, both teams were forced to play through poor weather conditions. The Maroons, who have now won five of the last six outings vs. AU, has shut out Averett for the seventh time in the series.
After a scoreless 87 minutes of play, two-time All-American Michael Stark (Newport News, VA, Menchville) scored his third game-winner of the year off a corner from Jason Ryan (Radford, VA, Radford). Ryan now has a team-high three assists on the season.
For the night, 11 different Maroons recorded a shot, led by freshman Carl Leist (Christiansburg, VA, Christiansburg) with four. Cameron Travalini (Millville, DE, Indian River) and Ryan each totaled three shots, including Ryan's two shots on goal.
The Maroons outshot the Cougars 19-7 including a 9-3 advantage in shots on goal. The men also held a 10-5 advantage in corner kicks. Roanoke's defense posted its seventh shut-out of the year.

Ryan Russell (Danville, VA, GW Danville) picked up his fifth victory of the year, totaling three saves in goal for the Maroons. Nate Barker took the loss for the Cougars, registering eight saves.
Roanoke will return to action Saturday, Oct. 2 as they host Randolph-Macon at Kerr Stadium. Kick-off is set for 1:00 p.m.
