SALEM, Va. --- Roanoke scored twice in the final six minutes to earn a 2-0 win over Sewanee at Kerr Stadium Sunday afternoon. The Maroons, who snapped a two-game skid, improved to 6-2 on the year while the Tigers dropped to 2-4.
Drew Claytor (Greensboro, NC, Grimsley) and AJ Tierce (Vorrhees, NJ, Eastern Regional) scored their first goals of the season to give Roanoke their sixth win of the season. In the non-conference win, the Maroons are now 3-0-1 against Sewanee in their first meeting since 1996.
Roanoke outshot Sewanee, 16-6, including 9-2 in the second half and 7-2 in shots on goal. The Maroons also held a 9-6 edge on corner kicks.
In the 85th minute, Claytor broke the scoreless tie off a free kick for the game-winner. With less than a minute remaining, Tierce scored off a breakaway as his shot slipped just under the keeper into the right side to put the game away.
Six different players had two shots for Roanoke, including Tierce who had two shots on goal. Garrett Schlosser and Thomas Moore totaled two shots each to lead the Tigers.
Avery Makel (Nellysford, VA, Nelson County) (3-1) collected two saves in his third shutout win of the season. Derek Williams (2-4) finished with five saves on the afternoon for the Tigers.
The men return to action this Wednesday, Sept. 22 as they will host ODAC-rival Washington and Lee. The Maroons hold a slim 36-32-5 series lead over the Generals, claiming the last three meetings.
The contest features the two winningest coaches in ODAC men's soccer history. Allison, who enters his 25th season, has 277 career wins, including 135 as conference wins. He is the ODAC's all-time wins leader in both categories. Rolf Piranian, who enters his 35th season at W&L, is second with 276 total victories and 131 in ODAC.
The conference showdown is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start at Donald J. Kerr Stadium.
