Roanoke Drops 8-1 decision to #20 St. Maryâ?'

SALEM, Va--- Roanoke fell to #20 St. Mary's, 8-1 in non-conference action this Saturday afternoon at Kerr Stadium. The Maroons now post a record of 1-4, while the Seahawks improved to 8-0 on the year. 
 
St. Mary's got off to an early start and never looked back in the just the fourth ever meeting between the two teams. It was the first time the squads have met since 2005, when St. Mary's came out on top, 3-0.
 
The Seahawks attacked early and often as they scored five goals in the opening intermission. Susan Smith struck first off a penalty corner from Samantha Locke. Ellen Hackstaff, Ali McIntosh, Rachel Heiss, and Locke all added scores before the end of the half.
 
Roanoke then tightened the defense up, holding the St. Mary's scoreless through the  first 20 minutes of the second stanza. Lauriann Parker, Katie Wisniewski, and Allie Skiest all found the back of the cage within the last 15 minutes to give the Seahawks eight different players who with a goal.
 
Freshman Kelly Finn (Fairhaven, NJ) scored her first career goal with 28 seconds remaining to avoid the shut-out.   Lee Sheldon (Darien, CT, Darien) led Roanoke with three shots on goal and Lichele Pace (Needham, MA, Needham) chipped in with two defensive saves.
 
St. Mary's outshot Roanoke, 41-7 and held an 8-4 advantage on penalty corners. 
 
Cristina Scichilone (South Yarmouth, MA, Nauset Regional) took the lost in goal for the Maroons, picking up 12 saves in the first half. Katherine Muhvich (Towson, MD, Towson) relieved her for the second half and recorded 11 saves in her first action of the year. Lydia Garcia earned the win for the Seahawks.
 
Roanoke will return to action Wednesday Sept. 22 when they host Eastern Mennonite. Play is set to begin at 4:00 p.m.
