ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. --- Roanoke men's soccer fell to North Carolina Wesleyan, 2-0 in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon. The Maroons dropped to 5-2 while the Battling Bishops improved to 6-1 on the season.
In a showdown between two of the top-10 teams in the NSCAA South Atlantic Region, RC was outshot, 17-7, including an 11-2 second half advantage. NC Wesleyan, who are 5-3-1 against the Maroons, held a 5-4 edge in corner kicks.
After playing through 55 minutes of scoreless soccer, North Carolina Wesleyan's Bayron Gudiel received a pass from Mark Wielitzka and flicked a shot in from 10-yards out to take the 1-0 lead. The second goal came with 15-seconds remaining off a cross from Arek Trochowski to Dennis Tasche to seal the win.
Drew Claytor (Greensboro, NC, Grimsley) led Roanoke with two shots on goal, followed by
Carl Leist (Christiansburg, VA, Christiansburg) with one. Gudiel led NCWC with three shots, two on goal followed by Owen White who had three shots on the day.
Ryan Russell (Danville, VA, GW Danville) (2-1) collected three saves for the Maroons. Ville Ture (2-0) finished with three as well in his second-straight shutout effort of the year.
The men return to action this Sunday, Sept. 19 as they host Sewanee in non-conference action. The Maroons are 2-0-1 against the Tigers as the two will meet for the first time since 1996. Roanoke is 8-8 against teams from the state of Tennessee. The match is scheduled for 1 p.m.
