FERRUM, Va. --- Roanoke Men's Soccer scored three first-half goals en route to a 3-0 season-opening win over Ferrum Wednesday evening on the road. The Maroons improved to 1-0 on the young season, while the Panthers dropped to 0-1.
Freshman
Carl Leist (Christiansburg, VA, Christiansburg)led the way with three shots, two on goal including the second goal of the match in the ninth minute.
Jason Ryan (Radford, VA, Radford)and
Jake Mercer (Raleigh, NC, St. David's )each totaled two shots, one on goal along with
Michael Stark (Newport News, VA, Menchville).
Stark scored the eventual game-winner in the sixth minute off an assist from Ryan. Leist scored an unassisted goal to pull ahead, 2-0 just four minutes later.
In the 37
th minute,
Peyton Lambert (Chesapeake, VA, Western Branch)scored off an assist from
AJ Tierce (Vorrhees, NJ, Eastern Regional)to give the 3-0 halftime edge and the final result.
Roanoke produced 15 shots to Ferrum's two in the night, including a 7-0 corner kicks advantage. The Maroons were also 7-1 in shots on goal.
Avery Makel (Nellysford, VA, Nelson County)earned the shutout in his first collegiate start, collecting one save in goal for the Maroons. Chris Taylor had four saves for the Panthers.
The Maroons will host Shenandoah Friday, Sept. 3 to kick-off the 2010 Roanoke Invitational. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Kerr Stadium.
