Lynchburg, Va--- Roanoke defeated Lynchburg, 84-75 Saturday afternoon at Turner Gymnasium. The Maroons improved to 4-2, 1-1 in ODAC play, while the Hornets fell to 4-3, 1-1 in the conference.
The win was Roanoke's second in their last five meetings against Lynchburg, after going 1-2 against the Hornets last season. Before last year, the Maroons held a 12-game win-streak against LC.
The men shot 50% from the field and held their opponent to 37% shooting on the afternoon, 23% from three point range.
Trailing by six with just over nine minutes remaining, Roanoke marched back, using a 25-10 run to close the game. The Roanoke defense held Lynchburg without a field goal over the last two-plus minutes of the game.
Melvin Felix (Caguas, Puerto Rico, Salem) paced five Maroons in double figures, with a game-high 29 points. He was 9-of-14 shooting from the field and 7-of-8 at the charity stripe. He added four assists and four three pointers to his stat line.
The two teams traded baskets through the first 10-minutes of action, as the lead changed hands six times before Roanoke made its first run of the game. The Maroons led by as many as 10 points with two-minutes remaining before taking a six-point halftime lead.
Lynchburg came out of the gate firing in the second stanza, tying the score on a Nate Campbell jump shot just two minutes into the half. The Hornets led by as many six points with nine minutes remaining, 65-59. Roanoke then mounted a furious 25-10 run over the remainder of the game to battle back for the victory.
Austin Chillemi and Tucker Lucas led Lynchburg with 16 points each. Campbell added 10 markers on the contest.
Kwasi Amponsah (Woodbridge, VA, Garfield) scored 10 points, along with four rebounds, and a career-high six assists on the contest.
Corey Poindexter (Pulaski, VA, Pulaski County/Hargrave) tossed in a season-high 10 points, going 8-of-12 from the line, while
Matt Crizer (Covington, VA, Alleghany) and
Jack Hamilton (Arlington, VA, St, Stephen's St. Agnes) chipped in 10 points apiece.
Terrell Johnson (Fredericksburg, VA, Riverbend) paced the Maroons on the glass, pulling down seven rebounds.
The Maroons travel to Las Vegas to participate in the Las Vegas Hoopla Dec. 19-21. The men will take on Wartburg College on the 19th and Morningside College on the 21st. Both contests are set for a 6:00 p.m. tip off.
