VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. --- Roanoke defeated Virginia Wesleyan, 2-1 in ODAC action at Foster Field to give them a big ODAC road win. The Maroons improve to 11-3, 6-1 in the ODAC, while the Marlins drop to 5-4-3, 3-2-1 in conference play.
Midway through the second half, Virginia Wesleyan fouled deep in their territory as
Matt Standley (Richmond, VA, Home School) set up for a free kick. His kick ricocheted off a Marlin defender and past the goalkeeper for the game-winner.
The Maroons, who now are 16-21-2 against the Marlins, are 5-1-1 against their ODAC-foe since 2007. Their only loss came in the 2008 ODAC Championship. It was their seventh-straight win at Foster Field, which includes the ODAC Championship win over Washington and Lee in 2007.
The first goal was scored by
AJ Tierce (Vorrhees, NJ, Eastern) off a corner kick as both
Chris Conover (Dagsboro, DE, Indian River) and
Michael Stark (Newport News, VA, Menchville) were credited with an assist in the 36
th minute.
The Marlins' John McKenzie scored the equalizer off a penalty kick in the 62nd minute to make it, 1-1. It was his second goal of the season.
Roanoke outshot VWC, 17-13, including a strong 11-3 advantage in shots on goal. The Maroons also held an 8-3 edge on corner kicks. It was a physical contest, as there were 30 fouls called, including six yellow cards and one red card issued.
Jared Wright led VWC with two shots on goal, while McKenzie added the third shot on goal on the penalty kick.
Stark and
Drew Claytor (Greensboro, NC, Grimsley) led Roanoke with three shots on goal apiece as Stark finished with four shots total on the afternoon. Conover and
Carl Leist (Christiansburg, VA, Christiansburg) each added two shots for the Maroons.
Ryan Russell (Danville, VA, GW Danville) (8-2) earned the win in goal for Roanoke, collecting two first-half saves.
Alan Hinton finished with nine saves for Virginia Wesleyan.
The men return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 12 as they host Emory & Henry in ODAC action. The match is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
