SALEM, Va. --- A second half scoring surge lifted Roanoke to a 3-1 victory over Randolph-Macon on Senior Day at Kerr Stadium Saturday afternoon. The Maroons finished the regular season with a 12-3-3 overall record, including a 9-0-2 conference mark. The Yellow Jackets dropped to 6-7-3, 3-5-3 in the ODAC.
Roanoke, which has gone unbeaten in its last 12 games, has finished undefeated in conference play for the second time in program-history. The Maroons finished 6-0 in 1988 en route to claiming the ODAC regular season title.
The Maroons avenged last season's loss to R-MC and has won five of the last six meetings against the Yellow Jackets. The defensive unit hasn't allowed more than a goal in the series over the last five years, outscoring their ODAC-foe, 20-2 during that span.
The win helps the Maroons' chances clinch an ODAC regular season title for the first time since 2002. It would be the fifth regular season title in program-history, three under head coach, Phil Benne.
Randolph-Macon put Roanoke on their heels midway through the first half as the Yellow Jackets took a 1-0 lead. In the 24
th minute,
McKenzie Garst (Roanoke, VA, Cave Spring),
Paige Gaeng (Frederick, MD, Thomas Johnson) and
Jessica Pease (Harrisonburg, VA, Eastern Mennonite) stopped three consecutive shot attempts in an open net before Ashley Malinowski scored off the fourth rebound to take the early advantage.
The scoring barrage for the Maroons began with
Rebekah Adams (Springfield, VA, West Springfield) as she scored from point-blank range to tie the contest less than four minutes into the second half.
Stephanie Parenteau (Virginia Beach, VA, Kellam) received a pass from
Jessica Welfare (Roanoke, VA, Hidden Valley) and dribbled through two defenders before she buried a shot into the right side of the net for the eventual game-winner in the 69
th minute. It was her team-best 10
th goal of the season, 19
th of her career.
In the 80
th minute, Adams scored her second goal to put the Yellow Jackets away. She scored off a header from
Carmen Graves (Christiansburg, VA, Christiansburg) for her 8
th goal of the year, which also gives her five multi-goal games this fall.
The Maroons outshot R-MC, 18-10, but held a slight 6-4 margin in shots on goal. Both teams had three corner kicks and totaled three saves each.
Adams finished the afternoon with seven shots, three on goal to lead Roanoke. Malinowski had four shots, two on goal for the Yellow Jackets.
The women will await their opponent as they will host the ODAC Quarterfinals next Saturday, Oct. 30.
