SALEM, Va. --- Roanoke fell to Shenandoah, 1-0 in non-conference action at Kerr Stadium Sunday afternoon. The Maroons fall to 5-2 on the season while the Hornets improved to 2-4-1.
The women controlled the contest on paper, winning, 21-6 in shots including 11-2 in shots on goal. They held an impressive 13-0 advantage on corner kicks.
With just under five minutes remaining in the contest, Shenandoah was fouled in the box, forcing a penalty kick. Amber Womack scored to give the Hornets its second win of the season.
Lindsay Kooiman (Fredricksburg, VA, Mountain View), who had an impressive save early in the first half preventing a goal, collided with a SU player and was sidelined for the remainder of the contest. It was the only save of the match for Roanoke as
Kelli Markham (Virginia Beach, VA, Kellam)filled in for the injured Kooiman.
Jessica Welfare (Roanoke, VA, Hidden Valley)led the Maroons with six shots, five on goal while
Chayna Schiff (Broomall, PA, Marple Newton)followed with four shots, one on goal.
Rebekah Adams (Springfield, VA, West Springfield)added two shots on goal.
The women will return to action as they travel to Harrisonburg, Va. to battle ODAC-foe Bridgewater on Tuesday, Sept. 22 at 4:30 p.m.
