SALEM, Va. --- Roanoke men's soccer dropped a heartbreaker to #11 Salisbury, 1-0 in non-conference action Sunday afternoon at Kerr Stadium. The Maroons dropped to 5-2-2 on the season while the Sea Gulls remain undefeated and improve to 7-0.
In a tight but physical match between two top NSCAA South Atlantic Region teams, there were 22 fouls as Salisbury held a slight advantage in shots, 9-6 and corner kicks, 4-3.
With less than five minutes remaining, Ben DeLisle had a break-away goal off an assist from Chase Nichols to give the Sea Gulls the win and their seventh win of the season.
Kyle Sterling led Salisbury with five shots while Taylor Johnston (Charleston, WV, Capital)and Chris Collins (Vinton, VA, William Byrd)each totaled two shots for Roanoke.
Greg Wellinghoff had three shots for the Sea Gulls. Tyler Rinko (Maple, Glenn, PA, Upper Dublin)finished with one save in his first career start for the Maroons.
The men are on the road Tuesday as the Maroons travel to Newport News, VA to take on Christopher Newport University in a South Atlantic region match-up. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
