Roanoke Gets Revenge at Meredith, 2-0 in Women's Soccer

RALEIGH, NC --- Roanoke defeated Meredith, 2-0 in non-conference women's soccer action this evening in North Carolina. The Maroons, winners of five-straight, improved to 5-1 on the season while the Avenging Angels dropped their first game of the season and now stand at 4-1-1.
Roanoke provided the offense in the first-half, as Stephanie Parenteau (Virginia Beach, VA, Kellam)and Carmen Graves (Christiansburg, VA, Christiansburg)notched their fifth and first goal of the season, respectively. Parenteau's goal came off an assist from Graves as they took a 1-0 lead with 17-mimutes into action. Graves scored the first goal of her career just five minutes remaining in the half to take a 2-0 lead.
The Maroons held on in the second-half to secure the victory and cap its revenge after a 1-0 loss to Meredith a year ago in Salem. Lindsay Kooiman (Fredricksburg, VA, Mountain View)finished with four saves, three in the second half to seal her fifth-straight shutout. It is the most consecutive shutout victories in program history, passing the 2008 and 1994 teams with four. The 5-1 start is the best since the 2007 team started out 7-1 en route to an 18-4-1 record and an NCAA Second Round tournament appearance.
Roanoke out-shot Meredith, 17-7, including a 12-2 advantage in the second half. They were also 9-4 in shots on goal and held a slight edge, 5-3 in corner kicks.
Margaret Houston (Augusta, GA, Westminster School)led the Maroons with six shots, three on goal while McKenzie Garst (Roanoke, VA, Cave Spring)finished with a season-high four shots, with one on goal. Alex Calvert had four shots, two on goal to lead the Avenging Angels. Goalkeeper Sarah Chadwick finished with seven saves on the night for Meredith.
The women return home on Sunday as they clash with another USA-South foe, Shenandoah University in an in-state contest. It will be the first meeting against the Hornets, who are currently 1-4-1 on the season. Game time is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
