FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- Margaret Houston (Augusta, GA, Westminster School)broke a scoreless tie in the 88th minute to lift Roanoke over Greensboro College, 1-0, at the Soccer for a Cure Classic hosted by Methodist University on Sunday afternoon. Roanoke, now 13-1-1 all-time against Greensboro, improved to 3-1 while The Pride dropped to 1-4 on the season.
Ashley Manning (Katonah, NY, Somers)earned the assist on the scoring play as her pass split the Pride's defense and Houston's game-winner was placed in the left corner. It was Houston's first goal of the season. She led the Maroons with a game-high six shots, three on goal as she passed
Tami Alcalde '09 for sixth all-time in career shots on goal and 14
th on the all-time scoring list (59 pts). It was also her ninth career game-winner, tying
Emily Ocheltree '05 for fifth all-time in that category.
Pride goalkeeper Katie Allegro made eight saves, five in the first half while
Lindsay Kooiman (Fredricksburg, VA, Mountain View)finished with one on the afternoon, earning her third-straight shutout of the season. She has moved up to fifth in career shutouts (10), ninth in wins and 10
th in career saves (97).
Roanoke out-shot The Pride, 21-6. Tessa Hall had three of Greensboro's shots. Cara Wilcox recorded The Pride's lone shot on goal in the 59th minute.
Stephanie Parenteau (Virginia Beach, VA, Kellam)and
Gina Valles (South Windsor, CT, Westminster )each totaled three shots each, one on goal. The Maroons also held an 8-0 edge in corner kicks.
The women will return to Salem as they host Hollins in their ODAC-opener on Wednesday, Sept. 16 at Kerr Stadium. The Maroons are 25-3 all-time against their cross-town conference foe. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
