Roanoke Finish 3-1 in 35th Annual Emory & Henry Volleyball Tournament

EMORY, Va. --- Roanoke won three of four matches in the 35th Annual Emory & Henry Volleyball Tournament this weekend. The Maroons' record now stands at 6-4 on the season.
Maggie Wagner (Roanoke, VA, Cave Spring), who totaled 43 kills and 51 digs for the weekend, was named to the all-tournament team. Shannon Stone (Williamsburg, VA)finished the weekend with 103 assists and improved her numbers in each of the four matches played.
On Friday, Roanoke defeated both Meredith and LaGrange in three games. The Maroons won with scores of 25-19, 25-18 and 25-22 against the Angels. They defeated the Panthers, 25-18, 25-13 and 25-8.
In the win over Meredith,Wagner and Kelsey Largen (Roanoke, VA, Cave Spring)each had 11 kills with Largen adding five digs and two aces. Kylie Lucas (Verona, VA, Fort Defiance)finished with six kills while Lynsey Ferris (Roanoke, VA, Northside)had her best outing of the season with four kills and a career-best six blocks. Caitlyn Long (Roanoke, VA, Cave Spring)had 21 assists and Emily Martin (Daleville, VA, Lord Botetourt)totaled eight digs to pace Roanoke.
Against LaGrange, Wagner totaled six kills and 12 digs to lead Roanoke. Largen and Rachel Hawkins (Winchester, VA, Millbrook)had six kills each while Long and Leah Horan (Richmond, VA, Freeman)finished with 15 and nine digs, respectively. Stone finished with 28 assists in the win over the Panthers.
The Maroons fell to Averett, 3-1 in the first match on Saturday. After dropping the first set, 25-15, Roanoke rebounded to win the second, 25-20. But the Cougars took care of business in the final two sets, winning 25-18 and 25-22 to win the match.
Wagner led the Maroons with a team-best 11 kills along with 16 digs while Largen added nine kills and six digs. Long finished with 25 digs at the libero position and Stone played setter for the second-straight match and finished with a season-best 31 assists.
In the final game of the tournament, Roanoke defeated Ferrum, 3-1. The Maroons won the first set, 25-22, but lost in the second frame, 26-28. They bounced back to win the next two with scores of 25-19 and 25-20 to beat the Panthers for the second time this season.
Wagner was a force again for the Maroons, finishing with season-bests of 15 kills and 20 digs. Morgan Grant (Abingdon, VA, Abingdon)had seven kills and a season-high five blocks. Martin totaled a tournament-best 17 digs and Lucas finished with a season-high six blocks. Stone, who improved her assists in each game this weekend, had a season-high of 35 in the final match.
The women will return home to host Guilford in their ODAC-opener this Wednesday, Sept. 16. Game time is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
