Roanoke Runs Past Greensboro, 25-5 in Men's Lacrosse Action

SALEM, Va. --- Roanoke scored four goals within the first four minutes of play and cruised to a 25-5 victory over Greensboro Wednesday afternoon at Kerr Stadium. The win propels the Maroons record to 2-0 while the Pride dropped its first game of the year, 1-1.
Prior to the start of the game, Bill Pilat was recognized for winning his 200th career game at Roanoke. The school's all-time winningest coach became only the 13th coach in NCAA Div. III history to reach the #200 win milestone. He is second in ODAC History in career wins and is seventh among active Div. III coaches in that category.
Roanoke, ranked ninth in the USILA Pre-Season National Poll, owned a 63-37 shot advantage while winning the winning the groundball war, 59-31. The Maroons were successful in 23-of-26 clear attempts while winning 22-of-32 face-offs. They took advantage of their extra man opportunities, scoring on 2-of-3 attempts.
With the score 14-3 Roanoke with five minutes remaining in the third period, the Maroons scored 10 unanswered goals to run away with the win. The 25 goals are the most Roanoke has scored against Greensboro in the series, in which the Maroons are now 14-1 since starting the series in 1994.
Ben Sultze led the Maroons with a career-best six goals while Jeff Keating scored four goals. Matt Quinton netted three goals while Pat March finished with two goals and one assist. Jake Dorsey finished with 12 saves for Roanoke. Zach Thomas led Roanoke with three assists.
March moved up to 26th all-time at Roanoke in career points (113) and eighth in shots on goal (118). Chas Carlson is tied for sixth in career assist (90). Thomas is now 10th on the all-time assists list (72) and is only two points shy of 10th on the career scoring list.
The Pride had five different scorers while Alex Haskins finished with nine saves in goal for Greensboro.
The men will return to action this Friday, Feb. 27 as they take on former All-American Andy Bonasera '03 and Birmingham-Southern in non-conference play. It will be the second of four first-time opponents for the Maroons this season as the Panthers are a first-year program. Game time is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
