Maroons Cruise Past Hollins for ODAC Win

SALEM, Va. --- Roanoke College scored the first 16 points of the contest as the Maroons cruised to their second fourth ODAC victory with an 88-38 win over Hollins University on Saturday afternoon in the C. Homer Bast Center. Roanoke remains undefeated at 6-0 overall and 4-0 in conference play. Hollins falls to 1-3, 0-2.
 
Roanoke is now 61-2 all-time against Hollins, marking the most wins for the Maroons against any one program. Roanoke has won the last 13 meetings between the two schools, dating back to the 2002-03 season in which Hollins earned a 67-64 result.

The Maroons shot an even 50-percent from the field in the first half in staking themselves to a lead it would never surrender.   RC shot 43.8-percent for the game, while also out-rebounding Hollins, 55-33. Turnovers hurt Hollins all afternoon. It coughed up possession 28 times (16 in the first half) leading to 31 points off turnovers and 12 fast-break tallies for Roanoke.

Of the 11 players that registered points for Roanoke, four reached double figures. Kendra Porter (Jamestown, NC, Dudley)set a new career-high with a game-best 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting, including 4-of-6 from three-point range. She also had four steals. Nicci Moats (Blue Ridge, VA, Lord Botetourt)notched a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds. Jordan Gholson (Louisa, VA, Louisa County)added 12 points and eight rebounds, and Jaleesa Osborne (Ordinary, VA, Gloucester)had 10 points, five boards, four steals and three assists. Rebecca Bays (Roanoke, VA, William Byrd)handed out seven assists.
 
Tamara Phillips led Hollins with 12 points as she connected on a pair of three-pointers. Kendra McKain added 10 points and four boards. Jasmine Greene had six points, five rebounds and three steals.
 
Five different players scored as Roanoke ran off 16 straight points to open the contest. McKain got Hollins on the board with a jumper at the 12:29 mark. Roanoke continued to force Hollins into mistakes and ill-advised shots in working its way to a 48-15 halftime lead. Porter scored 13 points in the opening frame, hitting 3-of-4 three-pointers. Sydney Webb (Hillsville, VA, Carroll County)and Lindsay Skaff (Charleston, WV, Charleston Catholic)also connected from long-distance prior to the intermission.

Roanoke continued to dictate the pace in the second half, combining good defense with solid ball movement on the offensive end.   Bays had five of her seven assists in the final 20 minutes, helping Roanoke to a pair of 50-point leads, including the game's final margin.

The women's team returns to action on Tuesday, December 15, as it plays host to Ferrum College. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. in the C. Homer Bast Center.
