The Roanoke College Women's Basketball Team received extra votes and move up in both the D3Hoops.com and WBCA Coaches Top-25 polls announced this morning. It is the third-straight week this season the Maroons have received votes in both polls.
Roanoke totaled 45 votes in the D3Hoops.com poll, just four behind fellow ODAC-member Randolph-Macon (49) to move up one spot to 31st in the rankings. In the WBCA Coaches Poll, the Maroons received five votes, three more than last week, tied for 31st with Lewis & Clark (OR) and Washington & Jefferson (PA). The Yellow Jackets remained 20th in the rankings for the second-straight week.
Jordan Gholson (Louisa, VA, Louisa County)and Jaleesa Osborne (Ordinary, VA, Gloucester)lead the team in scoring (11.5 ppg) followed by Caitlyn Long (Roanoke, VA, Cave Spring)(9.2 ppg) who leads the Maroons with eight three-pointers on the season. Nicci Moats (Blue Ridge, VA, Lord Botetourt)is averaging eight points and a team-best eight rebounds per game while Kendra Porter (Jamestown, NC, Dudley)(7.8 ppg) has a team-high 15 steals on the season.
The Maroons are off to a 6-0 start for only the third time in school-history. The 4-0 conference mark is the best start for the Maroons since opening 10-0 during the 1997-98 season. The six-game win-streak is the longest since claiming eight-in-a-row last year.
The women will take on South Region and in-state rival, Ferrum College tonight in non-conference action. It will be the last game of the 2009 portion of the season for both teams. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Bast Center.
