Maroons Top Bridgewater in Home Opener

Box Score
SALEM, Va. --- It was an old-fashioned grinder in the C. Homer Bast Center on Tuesday evening as Roanoke College opened conference play with a 59-51 win over Bridgewater College. The Maroons improve to 4-0 overall and 1-0 in ODAC action while the Eagles drop to 2-2 and 0-1.

Although a gritty and well-played affair, the 84th meeting between Roanoke and Bridgewater (RC leads 55-29 all-time) was quite sloppy as they combined for 50 turnovers. The Maroons took greater advantage of their opponent's miscues, scoring 32 points off 29 BC turnovers compared to 12 points on errors by the Eagles. The lead changed hands 18 times with a bevy of one-point leads dotting the play-by-play, but it was Roanoke that surged ahead in the final minutes.

A four-point Roanoke lead with 4:49 to play was quickly erased by field goals from Bianca Booker and Jordan Burkholder.   Up two points following a free throw by Jaleesa Osborne (Ordinary, VA, Gloucester), Roanoke received the shot in the arm it needed from Caitlyn Long (Roanoke, VA, Cave Spring)when the senior guard knocked down her second three-pointer of the contest to put RC ahead, 54-49, with 2:02 remaining.

Osborne added a jumper and Rebecca Bays (Roanoke, VA, William Byrd)a lay-up with 0:45 on the clock to increase RC's advantage to eight. Long hit the first of two from the stripe to give Roanoke its largest lead of the evening at 59-49 with 00:35 to go. Burkholder got a quick two back for BC with a tough baseline drive-and-score, but those would prove the final points of the contest.

Long and Jordan Gholson (Louisa, VA, Louisa County)led Roanoke with 13 points apiece. Long added five rebounds and three assists to her stat line. Gholson recorded a team-high nine boards to go with three blocked shots. Kendra Porter (Jamestown, NC, Dudley), a sparkplug the entire contest with her intense defense and speed on the break, scored nine points to go with five steals. Osborne, who had converted a RC record 20-of-20 shots from the foul line before tonight' 1-of-2 showing, had four steals. Nicci Moats (Blue Ridge, VA, Lord Botetourt)notched six points and seven rebounds while also blocking three shots.

Burkholder notched her first double-double of the season with game-highs of 19 points and 10 rebounds. She also had three assists and two steals. Katelynn Hottinger and Jenny Logan each tallied nine markers, and Booker finished with six points.

The first 20 minutes were slow going for both teams. Roanoke moved out to the first lead of note at 13-7 with 11:17 on the clock. Three more deadlocks ensued over the final portion of the opening frame with Bridgewater going to the locker room ahead by two at 24-22.

Gholson gave Roanoke the lead right out of the break, connecting on her first career three-pointer from the top of the key. The Maroons' lead grew to as much as four points following a Moats' lay-up at the 15:18 mark, but Bridgewater went on a quick five-point spurt to regain control, 32-31, after jumper a by Logan with 14:38 to play.

Neither team could gather much momentum over the ten minutes. Bridgewater owned a pair of three point leads during that stretch, but Roanoke enjoyed one of its own, lending to the see-saw pace that characterized the game. A Long three-pointer and a Gholson jumper gave Roanoke a four-point lead at the 4:49 mark, setting up the game's final minutes.

The Maroons return to the court on Friday, December 4, as they travel to Randolph College for an ODAC matchup. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. in Lynchburg.
