VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. --- Roanoke needed all 110 minutes plus a shootout to knock off #1 seed Virginia Wesleyan in the ODAC men's soccer semifinals Wednesday evening. The Maroons, who are the #4 seed, are now 13-5-3 on the season.
Cameron Travalini scored off an assist from
Chris Collins to give the Maroons the early 1-0 lead and held on the lead going into halftime. Travalini beat the keeper across his goal to the right in the 16
th minute.
Virginia Wesleyan scored four minutes later to tie the contest at one apiece and would eventually force overtime. Brandon Massie, who scored off an assist from John McKenzie, broke the ODAC career scoring record with 144 points.
After two 10 minute overtime periods, the match was sent into a shootout. Collins,
Kayvon Sarmadi,
Taylor Johnston and
Jason Ryan all converted to win, 4-2 in penalty kicks. The Marlins missed their second and fourth kicks, allowing Ryan to seal the Maroons' advancement with their fourth try.
VWC outshot Roanoke, 22-17 and were even at seven shots on goal for both teams. Travalini led Roanoke with four shots, followed by
Michael Stark and Collins with three shots each. Massie finished with a game-high eight shots.
Ryan Russell finished with six saves in goal for the Maroons. Ryan Zmuda also collected six saves for the Marlins.
The men will advance to the ODAC Championship match against Lynchburg in Lynchburg, Va. Saturday, Nov. 7. For Roanoke, it will be its third-straight trip to the title game and fifth overall since the tournament format began. Game time is yet to be determined.
