GREENSBORO, NC --- Jaleesa Osborne (Ordinary, VA, Gloucester)led Roanoke with a game-high 18 points in a 55-48 win over Guilford Tuesday afternoon at Ragan-Brown Field House. The Maroons improve to 3-0, 1-0 in the ODAC. The Quakers dropped to 2-2, 0-1 in the conference.
Roanoke, 29-13 against Guilford, won its conference opener for its third-straight game of the season.
The Maroons had to overcome its third-straight first half deficit to defeat the Quakers, and did so by shooting 50% from the field, 7-of-8 from the free throw line in the second half. They did it on the defensive end as well, holding Guilford to 25% from the floor, including 1-of-7 from three-point range in the final 20 minutes.
Guilford jumped out to a 7-1 lead early in the contest led by Alexandria Miles with four points in the first two minutes of play.
Roanoke responded as
Caitlyn Long (Roanoke, VA, Cave Spring)three-pointer sparked a 13-0 run over the following five minutes of action. A jumper by
Rebecca Bays (Roanoke, VA, William Byrd)capped the run to make it, 14-7 with 13:02 remaining in the half.
Guilford regained the lead, scoring 20 of the next 29 points to take a 27-23 lead at the half. A jumper by Alexa Williams gave the Quakers a 29-23 lead to open the second half.
With 11 minutes remaining,
Jordan Gholson (Louisa, VA, Louisa County)scored back-to-back layups to take the lead for good, 38-34. But the Quakers didn't go away, as Ann Seufer sank both free throws to close to within one, 38-37 with 8:37 left in the game.
Long sparked another run to help the Maroons pull away, scoring back-to-back jumpers to spark a 10-2 run over the next five minutes. Osborne's jumper with 2:50 remaining capped the run to make it 48-39. The Maroons hit 7-of-8 free throws down the stretch to seal their third win of the season.
In addition to her 18 points, Osborne had five rebounds and four assists in the win. She shot 5-of-7 from the floor, 2-for-2 from three-point range while 6-of-6 from the charity stripe. Gholson had her first double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds along with two blocks. Long finished with seven points, three assists and four steals to lead Roanoke.
Nicci Moats (Blue Ridge, VA, Lord Botetourt)had seven points and five rebounds while Bays led the team with six assists.
Jazlyn Gibbs led Guilford with 11 points and four rebounds. Alexa Williams narrowly missed a double-double with nine points and a game-high 14 rebounds and four steals to lead the Quakers. Ann Seufer finished with seven points, seven rebounds and a team-best four steals.
The women return to action next Tuesday, Dec. 1 as they take on ODAC-foe Bridgewater at the Bast Center in their home-opener. The Maroons are 54-29 against the Eagles but will look to avenge last seasons' ODAC Semifinals loss which ended their season. Game time is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
