SALEM, Va. --- McKenzie Garst (Roanoke, VA, Cave Spring)had three assists and
Carmen Graves (Christiansburg, VA, Christiansburg)scored two goals to lead Roanoke past Bridgewater, 6-1 in the ODAC Quarterfinals Saturday afternoon at Kerr Stadium. The Maroons up their record to 12-6 and will advance to the ODAC Semifinals. The Eagles end their season with a 11-6-1 record.
The 6-1 score has equaled the 2000 and 2007 meetings as both the largest win margin and most goals scored in the series. The Maroons are now 12-0-1 against the Eagles, including 2-0 in the ODAC Tournament. The women are now 31-21 all-time in the ODAC Tournament.
Two of Garsts' assists went to Graves, who scored both off headers from corner kicks. Garst, who is the team-leader in assists with eight on the season, is currently second in the conference in that category.
Ashley Manning (Katonah, NY, Somers)scored her first-game winner of her career in the 43
rd minute as the Maroons went up, 1-0 at the half. It was her second goal of the season.
The offensive explosion for Roanoke occurred in the second half within the first eight minutes of play. Garst and Graves hooked up on back-to-back goals off corner kicks to increase its lead to 3-0.
Garst was credited with her third assist of the afternoon to
Jessica Welfare (Roanoke, VA, Hidden Valley), who scored her eighth goal of the season to make it, 4-0 midway through the second half.
After an Eagle goal to make it, 4-1 in the 69
th minute,
Cynthia Suttora (Fort Salonga, NY, Our Lady of Mercy Academy)had a breakaway goal from
Stephanie Parenteau (Virginia Beach, VA, Kellam)to make the score, 5-1 in the 74
th minute.
Maggie Dent (Roanoke, VA, Patrick Henry)scored her first career goal with two minutes remaining to give the final result.
Roanoke out-shot Bridgewater, 23-9, including 15-3 in the first half and 12-4 in shots on goal. The Maroons also held a 7-3 advantage on corner kicks. Manning led the women with four shots, three on goal. Garst also had four shots to lead the Maroons, followed by Graves and Welfare with three shots each.
Lindsay Kooiman (Fredricksburg, VA, Mountain View)finished with two saves in the win for Roanoke.
Kelli Markham (Virginia Beach, VA, Kellam)added a save in goal for the Maroons. Cari Hensley had five saves while Shauna Manovich added one for the Eagles.
The women will travel to Virginia Wesleyan, which defeated Eastern Mennonite, 3-0 in the ODAC Semifinals. The Maroons are 11-14-2 against the Marlins and will look to break an 11-game skid as they haven't won a match since 2001. They are 2-3 against VWC in the ODAC Tournament, 0-2 in semifinal matches. Game time is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 4 with a time to be determined by Monday morning.
