Roanoke falls in Season Finale at Hampden-Sydney, 5-1

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. --- Roanoke dropped its season finale to Hampden-Sydney, 5-1 at Miller Field on Tuesday afternoon. The Maroons end the regular season fourth in the ODAC with an 11-5-3 record, 7-2-1 in the ODAC. The Tigers finish 15-3, 8-2 in the ODAC and finished second in the conference standings.
Playing on a poor surface due to rain, both teams traded shots before Bryan Wharton scored the eventual game-winner in the 13th minute to make it 1-0. The Maroons continued to attack the Tigers backfield and Ryan Russell (Danville, VA, GW Danville)made some tough saves to go into the half with a one-goal deficit.
The Tigers scoring barrage came alive in the second half, netting four goals en route to their third-straight victory over the Maroons at home. H-SC has outscored Roanoke, 12-3 in the last three meetings at Miller Field.
Cameron Lee (Roanoke, VA, Cave Spring)scored the first goal of his career off a header from a corner kick by Matt Standley (Richmond, VA, Home School)to close the gap to 3-1 midway through the second half. It was Standley's fourth assist of the season.
Roanoke out-shot Hampden-Sydney, 14-12, 11-1 on corner kicks. Russell finished with three saves in goal for the Maroons. John Robert Plyler had seven for the Tigers.
The Maroons, the #4 seed in the ODAC Tournament, will face #5 seeded Eastern Mennonite in the ODAC Quarterfinals this Saturday, Oct. 31 at Kerr Stadium. Roanoke is 4-3 all-time against EMU in the post-season, 3-3 in the ODAC Tournament and 2-2 in ODAC Quarterfinal matches. The last meeting the Royals defeated the Maroons in double-overtime, 2-1 in 2005. Game time will be determined on Wednesday afternoon.
